Timothy Chow: This is quite an interesting suggestion that I hadn't heard before.

I point out with minor annoyance that I've made the suggestion of a time penalty for errors (such as illegal moves) before, on this very site. To be clear, my annoyance is not directed at Timothy (no fair to expect him to have read and remembered everything), rather just at the universe. It's the story of my life. I come up with good ideas, they get pooh poohed. A year later, some other person comes up with the same fracking idea, and they're a genius. FML.
