Players that benefit from an illegal play are still entitled to insist on having the move played legally. I don't think they are wrong to do this in any way whatsoever.

There is a separate issue of letting an opponent correct an incredibly bad (but legal) move made because of an obvious oversight or perhaps influenced by an external distraction. But that is a separate issue.
