Jeb, I truly believe you and I have the same standards: you are obligated to play to win within the rules of the game and good sportsmanship, and I agree that calcutta partners have NOTHING to do with this UNLESS you choose NOT to play to win, in which case, you are not only hurting your calcutta partners, but the integrity of the tournament.

Now, playing to win does not mean you must be a jerk, but it does mean that you are supposed to take advantage of your opponent's mistakes if he misses a hit, or runs out of time on his clock, or any other stupid mistake he might make. Why? Because a) the rules say you are supposed to do this; b) because you might make those mistakes yourself and since you risk being hurt when you make those mistakes, why shouldn't your opponent's be at the same risk?; c) because if each player is free to decide which rules to enforce and how much to enforce them, the integrity of the game and the rules break down.

Does that mean you should never cut your opponent any slack? I believe if someone spills a drink on the table or there is a disturbance and my opponent forgets to pick up a checker, or forgets to hit the clock, I am obligated to allow the correction and not penalize my opponent. But if he's just careless, too bad! And if I am careless, again, I would not accept leniency....I have an obligation to apply the rules even more strictly on myself.

Now, the reason this entire thread started is because I do have a problem strictly enforcing rules that I believe are harsh or unfair...but out of respect for the game, I will do so, but at the same time, I will do my best, as you and I and Chuck have proven, to try to get the rules changed or improved to eliminate as many of these ethical conflicts as possible. Legal moves is one of those changes that does just that for many problems that now exist.
