Here's a dilemma if playing legal moves

Should I really have the right, on my own, to decide which rules are going to be strictly enforced and which will not be?
Sorry Phil, but this is bullshit. When I make you play legally, even though it is to my disadvantage, I AM enforcing the rule strictly. The rule says is my option, and I am exercising that option.
The next question is, how would I react and feel if I had made the error? I know, believe it or not, I would not only NOT ask for mercy, if offered I would graciously thank my opponent and reject it. I would insist, because of the integrity of the game and the rules, to be penalized for my mistake.
In the case of the 64, which would be legal without hitting, you have this right. For an actual illegal play, you do not. If, for example, you put your own checker on the bar, it is MY option, not yours, to make you play it legally. If you insisted on being penalized for your error, you would have to explain your position to the director when I asked for a ruling.
