Bob, my point is that the probabilistic equivalencies are practically almost irrelevant here.

An uncompensated bye into the finals hands someone a guaranteed 2nd place prize often worth a couple grand, whereas those two who have the extra match to play are guaranteed nothing.

Much better to have the late bye pay some compensation.
