Masters events and Doubles should be handled this way. Byes totally suck in general and should be avoided if possible and especially in single elim. events.

Sometimes in Masters and Doubles there are bye backs and continuous entries for a while and the director can't be sure how many will end up playing.

Playing down to 3, be it 12 or 24 or even 6 and then doing compensation makes sense and is fair and all the late bye means is that those who get one have a better chance to win trophy and title, but no prize pool edge.

Pat Gibson often runs his masters as 40 players and plays down to 5 with compensation.
