I concur with all you say. It is almost no different (opponent strength?) whether you get a late-round bye or early-round bye. I think the problem most people have with a late-round bye versus an early-round bye is because of the fact that while both types of byes ~ double your equity, the early-round bye does so when it is low and the late-round bye does so when it is high. Tournament participants are familiar with equity because of a bye increasing from (entry fee - rake) to (2 x (entry fee-rake)). They are not so familiar with equity because of a bye increasing from (12 x (entry fee -rake)) to (24 x (entry fee-rake)).

While there is very, very little difference between the early-round bye and late-round bye in terms of equity in the event, there is a huge difference in the perceived values of each.
