Improved Cube Handling in Races

Hi Stein,
since I heavily built upon Tom's work, I was aware of your remark about the size of the doubling window. In fact, it was one of the reasons for specifying a large range for the parameters defining its size, see table 2 in my article. This way, the optimization software Isight would hopefully find out whether something along the lines of Thorp (-4, -3), Keith (-3, -2), or Trice's EPC method (-2, -1) was the best solution (measured from the point of last take).
Regarding the database that Tom and I used: Strictly spoken, Bob is right: The database only backs the statement "It contains mostly short races" rather than my bold "Most races are short". However, my experience from live play confirms that I rarely encountered a race longer than 90. And in these cases, my denominator of 6 of course overestimates the maximum allowable pip difference for the last point of take. But re-introducing a long/short race distinction is not worth the effort in my humble opinion, see appendix A.3 of my article.
Best regards
Axel
