Hi Todd,
when restricting the database to positions with 65 % <= CPW <= 80 %, the average CPW error decreases to 3.34. I did not (and will not) try whether other parameter values will give better cube decisions for this smaller database.
Yes, Lamford's formula is funny. Fortunately, Tom Keith has already shown it is not worth the effort.
More parameter might of course help, but they need to be rooted in real backgammon: Just adding, say, the phase of the moon or the color of your opponent's hair as parameters will not do. I am open for suggestions, though.
