yes, I used the same set of positions. "Of course I did", I am tempted to write. Would you trust a car manufacturer that claims superior crash test results, but gives you the result of his front crash and compares with side crash results of the competition? Hopefully not.
I would happily use a different database, but not, as I wrote before, a generated one with, say, all positions with 15 checkers distributed over 10 points. I wanted a REALISTIC database, and Tom's old one was the only one I could find. Also, I doubt that with 23 parameter "over-fitting" can happen for 50000 positions ...
However, the idea of scripting GNU Backgammon to do this is VERY interesting.
