Yes, there are two competing priorities. The current convention of writing your own score first means you are less likely to write the score on the wrong side because you always do it the same way. Whereas the proposed convention of players both writing the score the same way makes it easier to compare scores at the end of the game. ("Score is 4-3." "Correct." No confusion about who has 4 and who has 3.)

I like your Gammon factor idea.
