Arabic numerals have tangible advantages. When you perform arithmetical computations more complicated than addition or subtraction, or use non-decimal number bases, Arabic numerals are significantly more convenient. If no one ever did anything other than count in base-10, Roman numerals would probably have prevailed. And counting in base-10 is all you do in scoring a backgammon match.

I really don't see a tangible advantage to scoring things in "away" language. I don't see why normal scoring is complicated. And "3a 7a Next" doesn't convince me. In tennis, ping pong, any best-of-X playoff series, the "real circumstance" is away scoring, but every human being seems to understand normal scoring just fine and as far as I know it hasn't caused a problem yet.
