Stenography might be an apt analogy. Very small limited use which could be abrogated easily.

Nactation might be actively used by 50 people out of a 10,000 person active community and a 10,000,000 casual community.

I understand why it's used. And I've never seen any necessity. Overall it is a distraction and an annoyance. And I know a lot of it. It's certainly not of enough use to the community as a whole to make up for the added complexity.
