Away scoring — Actions speak louder than words

Interesting point, Mike. I always use standard scoring on my bot.
I personally feel the difference between standard scoring and away scoring is so trivial that it's not even worth worrying about, although as with all things it's better if the rules deal with it clearly. Failing that, I suppose it's up to the TD.
I wonder, though: there are many sports and games that are played until one side reaches a certain score. But can anyone name such a sport/game that is traditionally scored with away scoring? I can't think of any.
The only reason people do it in backgammon is because it leads naturally to match equity calculations, and I sort of resist the idea that it should become the default. I don't think it's particularly media-friendly, for one thing.
