Ken has not stated that the rankings will be a representation of pure skill or ability, instead it seems the purpose is to simply represent the results of ABT events, like all ranking systems. That could serve several purposes and would be of interest to many, alongside the giants list and any other classifications that may already exist. Anyone who bothers to look at a new tournament results data-driven ranking system would hopefully understand that it does not attempt to represent that the player at the top of the list is 'better' than the player at spot 30, but instead just showing that the player at the top had better results than player 30. With the methods Ken is proposing, and how it will likely evolve, this could still be used to identify players who may be in the wrong division.

The global poker index for tournament play uses a similar system with 3 main factors; the buyin size, the percent of field defeated (better than using finishing position since field size is incorporated) and the aging factor (recent results are more significant then older results). The main hurdle for backgammon seems to be the low number of events and the low field sizes, but Ken is off to a great start with his proposal IMO.
