I agree with Phil: backgammon rules should be standardized worldwide. If every federation does its own thing, then people from one federation will be at a disadvantage when playing in a tournament hosted by another federation. They're used to doing things a particular way.

A real world example is driving on the left or right side of the road. Some countries drive on the left side of the road (like the UK) and some countries (like the U.S.) drive on the right side. Back in the early 1980s one of my managers and three associates were killed in Scotland. They went out late at night for dinner and on the drive home, the driver became confused when a car came at them. He swerved to the right ... which was into the oncoming car.

At my backgammon club we've had a few visitors who were born in Iran or nearby. They were used to playing by their rules ... not using a dice cup, throwing dice on either side of the board. They resented having to play by U.S. rules, and our players resented them imposing their rules on us. Hard feelings ensued. Such animosity can be avoided if the world were more standardized.
