You are probably correct in aggregate. Sorry to have been dismissive.

My only issue is that there is some je ne sais quoi to performance. Some people underperform, even in professional [physical] sports and the "best" might never perform best. Why should it be different in backgammon? Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. But performance seems important enough to count for something.

A theoretical example: double elimination tournament...player A plays a 0.0 in the first 4 rounds. $ round comes and they play a 15.0 and lose. Fighters bracket and they play another 4 matches at 0.0 and then the next $ one at 15.0. This person has averaged (let's assume it is the true average) a 3.0. An lets say that in the first 4 rounds each time their average opponent played a 7 and the $ round opponent plays a 4.0 on average. Will this 3.0 PR player average close to the same results as a "normal" 3.5 or even 4.0 player?
