PR standard for top 100 US players

In Response To: Question for Neal (or anyone else who cares to comment) re top 100 US-based players (Rod)

The answer is unknowable, obviously, but here's my best guess, for whatever it's worth. If your average play is at or below the following PRs then you're likely in the top 100 match players in the US: Against XG in Ironman mode: 4.5; GG speedgammon or similar gatling-gun-paced online play: low to mid 5's; clocked live tournament play: 6.

Whatever the PR standards actually are, to be among the top 100 US players is not a particularly lofty distinction. To state the obvious, serious backgammon is a tiny community compared to chess, bridge, poker, scrabble, etc. Getting back to Paul's estimate, that there are maybe 40 players worldwide who play under 4: If there were as many serious backgammon players worldwide as there are chess players, and if they studied as hard as the chess players do, then there would be tens of thousands of sub-4 PR players out there. This is a trivial observation, I suppose, but it's a perspective to keep in mind, perhaps, as we're gearing up to exalt the Backgammon Giants of the World, class of 2014.
