Not reminding your opponent to press the clock

I picked the dice and once I noticed he didn't hit the clock I stopped...

I have never played timed backgammon face-to-face. However, if Paul didn't hit his clock to signify his turn was finished, and you (David) picked up the dice, isn't that an infringement of the rules? That being so, I wonder what recourse Paul would have had if he had been left to "lose on time"?

No criticism intended, just raising a possible technical issue.
