There's a subtle point which I'm not sure has been clarified in this discussion (I haven't read every single message so maybe I missed it). Namely, there's a difference between Phil trying to maximize his expected winnings versus trying to maximize his probability of coming out ahead of Mochy at the end of 30 games. If the latter is the goal, then match-play-like considerations come into play.
