this is definitely wrong for me Marv -- I'm a recreational player in the sense that I do not take the time to study such that I can compete evenly with giant level or even near giant level players. But I certainly do calculate take points, and, if I don't actually memorize tables, I do remember a few key bits of match equity and consider it in my decisions, look at rollouts and study openings. It's true that I enjoy playing. But it's also true that I can play a local club tournament for a $20 entry fee with 75% return where I am a better than average player. I can play (including against a couple of giants, and a fair number of very good players from my level to a cut above) at dailygammon for free. There is some real value to playing a bigger pool, but I'm hardly completely insensitive to rake or EV. I'm willing to be shelling out a few bucks in EV to play live generally, and I'd be willing to shell out a decent chunk ($50-100) to play an open event with lots of great players, because the chance to win something important, and play against the best is worth something extra. If the side tournaments qualify in that way, then ok, but if the side events are just recreational players.

I do care about my equity, or at least I care that I'm not spending more than it's worth. Maybe the marginal cost of an extra player at an ABT level event is rally in the $20-30 range? If so, then fine. But if it's a lot less, then having your recreational events be under $100 with 70-80% return could draw more players.

Or I might be very unusual, and most people either don't look at things like I do, or get to a high enough level of play that playing the open event is not essentially lighting your entry fee on fire.
