Here's the main reason: clocks have only been a part of the BG culture for the last 5 years or so, whereas they've been a part of chess for a long time. People are still getting used to it.
It's laughable to play a tournament chess game without a clock. When backgammon gets to that point, I might think it's more OK to be more cutthroat about the clock. Until then, you should help your opponent out, so as to not give the clock haters one more thing to harp on.
