Thank you for your comments, Colin. My question was general, not directed at you.

I'd note (again, and generally — it comes up often) that's a rule that is right, ethical, accepted or acceptable in one game isn't necessarily right for another. As here, for example, where a rule that requires scrupulous attention to following certain procedures might be right for a game like a chess where a player has 2.5 hours to make 40 moves, and another rule might be right for a game like backgammon where a player might have to make 400 moves in half that time.
