Jason, if people don't teach, don't write books and if federations can't afford to hire staff for promotion, the game does not attract more players and encourage people to play at a higher level.
In a perfect world people can learn without paying for it, but books cost money to make and distribute, and so does software, and if someone wants to take lessons it is not easy to find someone qualified with the tools, time, and desire to teach large numbers of people simply as a volunteer.
I know there are people who think everything should be available to everyone for free, but you get what you pay for. I am not at all embarrassed to say that people must pay me for my lessons and st the same time, kids and people who can't afford it who come to me either get help free or at a great discount.
Where would golf be without golf pros? Those teachers help people understand and enjoy the game more and play better and they become dedicated to the game. Same for tennis pros, ski instructors, bridge teachers, and it's the same for backgammon.
I have taught over 400 students and my greatest claim to fame is that virtually every one is a dedicated player who enjoys the game more now than they did before taking lessons. That's not just because they play better (they do) and win more (they do) but because the more you understand this game the more fascinating and interesting it is and the more dedicated you will be to the game.
