Nobody (in this thread at least) has said or suggested that bridge is a gambling game.

Well, let's correct that. Bridge is a gambling game. It's not often played that way but it can be, and there is potentially a lot of action and a lot of room for both luck and skill to determine the outcome.

Bridge (particularly when $ awards are part of the competition) has always suffered (in some ways similar to online BG play) from the potential for undetected cheating in the form of collusion. Most of that is because the rules only allow certain strict signaling/communication. You could loosen the rules but that might lead to unconventional signaling dominating the game.
