Ah, now I understand. When you said 7C was the "right contract" I thought you meant from the standpoint of what you could have ascertained from the bidding, which in the context of chicago X$/point would mean you'd have be at least 70% sure of the grand to bid it (and maybe 90%+ if you are playing above your bankroll due to the juicy game opportunity).
If you couldn't have been that sure from the bidding, then I would consider a safe 6N or 6C to be the "right contract" at the game you were playing, even if it would have been wrong at match points. (Might still be right to bid the safer small slam at IMPs).
I guess I have played enough rubber and read enough old-school bridge players that I don't think of match-points as some inherent standard. I love the intricacies of non-matchpoint play where safety of any contract is primary. Having grown up playing rubber bridge with my family, it will always feel a little weird to take a 55%ish play for an overtrick that will lose the contract if it fails.
I would have no reason to question your playing for those stakes, just noting how huge they were. I assumed that you wouldn't have played, had not you and your brother judged the prospective gain to be worth the risk given his bankroll.
