The Italians ruled the bridge world in the 50s-70s with the Blue Club and similar systems. They used 1 of clubs as an artificial bid to signify any really strong hand, and bid suits in an unnatural order (canape style) and also used to intervene more on weak hands with special bids and conventions. (seems ages ago that I played bridge, so hopefully my memory is accurate).
