Stakes don't matter. They only matter if you're dumb enough to play outside of your comfort zone/bad bankroll management. Warren Buffett and Bill Gates are not the world's best backgammon players simply because no backgammon player would play them for the stakes they could play for and still not care. Your risk of ruin would almost be a certainty assuming they are even mildly competent.
This is an old argument from CMC I think saying "Gus plays for stakes X, Y, and Z". I'll be in line to say Gus is one of the best bg players around but the fact that he has the bankroll to play for stakes X, Y, and Z doesn't make him any better of a player to me. John Daly plays slots for 5 hours at 5k a pop and loses 1.5 million he has a serious problem. Michael Jordan does the same thing and it's a nice way for him to pass an otherwise boring lunchtime.
