>We sometimes need to use tie-breaks because sometimes players end up on the same number of points for the season. We need to decide divisional end of season standings in order to process promotions and relegations.

This is a tautology. We need to break the tie so we can break a later tie. For something as consequential as promotion or relegation, you can surely find time for a one-match playoff.

>I don't think there is much distortion of matchplay strategy at all. Even in matches where the match score is not relevant, general backgammon strategy is to maximize one's own points gained whilst minimizing one's opponent's points gained. There is a definite skill to this.

No. General backgammon strategy is to try to get to say 9 points in a 9point match. You don't care how many points your opponent gets if you win. You don't care how many points you have if you lose.

Tiebreakers can distort BG strategy. For a pure example, suppose you need to win your final match to tie your current opponent in the round robin standings. If you win 9-7, you win because of the tie breaker. If you win 9-8, your opponent wins the tiebreaker.

At 8-7 post Crawford, your opponent rolls 3-1 and you reply 5-4. Opponent doubles. Do you take?
