What is the best (fairest and most efficient) way to tie-break 4 player round robins?

Another way to approach the issue is to look at whether the incidence of ties can be reduced in the first place, which is akin to Neil Robins' suggestion.

These leagues seem to employ 11 point matches. It is a convenient length, being considered neither a short nor long match and, at an hour and-a-half or so on the average, is of a similar duration to a typical evening of entertainment: a short film or play, a football match, or a restaurant meal. Perhaps, however, it should not be set in stone.

Instead of playing two 11 point matches against each other (potentially 'home' and 'away'), the players could play two 'best of 3' to 5 points. I would imagine that 2.5 of these would be of similar duration to one 11 pointer. Therefore, each match would be won either 2-0 or 2-1, greatly reducing the incidence of ties at the end of the round robin. It is a way of using the score of each match without affecting the actual matches (sets) themselves.
