Thank you very much for your questions. They are good!

"OK - there is a problem of possible collusion, if only one of the players (at best) can go through, they can jack up the cube level - see Mochy's critic you linked to."

The problem is real. Correct. But: 1. you don't know exactly how many GPs you really need to come in the best 8 (or 16);

2. the trailer should have as minimum 5 GPs to take part in the consolation.

3. And "last, but not least" there is YOUR money you have to spend your opponent (and nobody knows what will be happened in the final)

"A second problem is that if you lose a lot of money in your first money match (say bad luck on 2 high cube games), you will be GP depleted, and play against other that are GP depleted. As you can only win the minimum of what you and the other one has, and continue to be paired with other with similar number of GPs, you may never recover and gather enough GP to qualify."

It is a little bit others as you supposing: 1. you can make rebay of the start number of GPs in the first three rounds; 2. in case you won in the next rounds, you'll be for sure qualified for the final. 3. and what's more: you can even lost 5 times (1-2 GPs), but won only 2 times (6-8 GPs) and be qualified in the final round.

"In a normal DE tournament, you would have many more chances to catch up".

Unfortunately only two. And you will never recieve even one cent for your 3 or 5 wins in the competition

The more interesting in the format proposed is the combination of the preliminary competition (promoted like money games) and final DE and conso knockout, where the difference of points in the matches is your money you have won. Plus extra prizes for three places in the final and two places in conso.
