Hi Bob, I'll try and explain further.

The setup is currently:

  • Divisions of 4 players each. (We started with 16 players)
  • Each player plays their 3 opponents in their Division twice (double round robin - 6 fixtures total)
  • Each fixture scores 3 'league points' for a win, 1 for a loss and 0 for an unplayed match (a.k.a. a draw)
  • Each Season window lasts ~70 days/10 weeks in which the players should complete their 6 matches
  • At the end of each season each player's league points are added up.
  • The person with the most points from each Division (1st) gets promoted to the Division above, the bottom person (4th) gets relegated to the Division below.
  • In case any players are level on league points at the end of a season, the tie-break is currently decided by: { Points} -> Score difference -> Score for. This tie-break is one of the preset options available on the League management website backend.

In our recently completed inaugural season, to decide who got placed in each Division we held a 'Group Stage' with players grouped into 4's randomly.

    This diagram illustrates this process:

Most of us are able to attend a fortnightly group meeting, but players are also encouraged to schedule their matches between themselves at any other mutually convenient time they can find. This allows players to negotiate around each other's different life obligations (jobs, wives, kids etc.) So far this system is working quite well.

I hope I haven't missed anything. Here is the website URL for more context: http://sussexbackgammon.leaguerepublic.com/l/league/184426475.html
