Crawford Rule History

You make an interesting point about the introduction of the Crawford Rule. From it's first reference in the 1970 "Backgammon Book" by Jacoby and Crawford, the rule was only recent and certainly wouldn't have been used in 1964. The rule isn't mentioned in the 1969 book "Backgammon" by Obolensky and James. It would seem then that the rule was introduced in 1969-1970.

For some reason the World Champs were not run in 1970, though the major international Bahamas tournament was. The following link on Backgammon Galore gives an excellent summarised history:
