Did Ed complain too late?!

By your argument should Mitrelis never have rolled at all and his roll been disallowed?
Though I watched it live I did go back, after your posting, and watch the immediate couple of minutes of the episode.
First and foremost we can just cut to the chase, Mitrelis should never have touched Ed's checkers. Certainly not to 'correct' an illegal play when multiple options for 'correction' existed.
Secondly, Ed did obviously notice and object to the position of the checkers, though not vehemently nor demonstrably, before Mitrelis rolled. Therefore, Mitrelis had an obligation, by the tournament rules, to have the play corrected before proceeding.
It was not clear in the players' recitation of the events to the Tournament Director nor in the Tournament Director's explanation to the Committee that Ed had noticed and objected to the position prior to Mitrelis's roll.
Your argument only worsens Mitrelis's case.
However, as I've noted, the resolution of the dispute -- a correct resolution -- ultimately had zero bearing on the game and the match. That is a fortunate thing. It became immaterial.
Everyone should just learn from the Mitrelis mistake and NEVER, EVER touch the opponent's checkers -- other than putting a hit checker on the bar.
