“Some people like Coke. Some people like Pepsi. If Pepsi goes out of business, some Pepsi drinkers will switch to Coke. But some of them will stop drinking soda.”

Perhaps, but then, in a free market, an ambitious entreprenuer will see the opportunity represented by pent-up demand for Pepsi and will enter the market with a Pepsi clone. If the demand is real, a free market will supply it.

The same is true for tournaments. If you think that tournament directors are dumping a significant market when they switch to legal moves, perhaps you can snatch up those customers by simply starting a new tournament.

In a way, however, this argument is irrelevant. A more telling argument is based on liberty. Surely, you are not suggesting that some overarching backgammon fascist (“there ought to be a law”) should be dictating how individual tournament directors should run their tournaments.

You see, I am half-Libertarian myself!
