I agree 100% that the TD sets the rules. So issues like players changing the number of checkers and so forth don't apply because no TD is going to allow that unless it's a side event played with fewer checkers.

Your other objection was as to spectators. First, there may be no spectators. But more importantly, those spectators didn't spend a couple of thousand dollars funding my weekend backgammon trip. I did. I hope they enjoy watching my match, but I'm playing for my entertainment, not theirs.

I don't understand your final point that TDs should tend not to change the fundamental rules. LM is the change, not NLM.
