There are a lot more intermediate and advanced level players than there are giants, masters and grandmasters. This seems like a positive way to encourage more intermediates and advanced to participate in tourneys so they can acquire a title. As an intermediate, myself, it certainly makes tourneys more attractive to me. However, health issues make it unlikely that I will take the opportunity to participate. I would love to improve my skills and tell a few close friends that I am a Candidate Master. I suspect this program will provide motivation for many to develop their skills, participate in tourneys, and encourage growth in backgammon. Will the benefits be worth the efforts and resources?
