Do properties of the thalamus apply to one situation but not the other?

Yes, of course. It's a question of constant vs variable.

The shadow is a constant. You may notice it when you first sit down, but as you concentrate on the game, it will quickly be filtered out as unnecessary information, and you will "forget" that it's there. Someone taking a picture is variable. Each time it happens, your brain will process it and make a determination about its importance.

The other aspect is that your opponent may wonder why you are taking a picture. Obviously, you find something about the situation interesting. Is he, perhaps, missing something? I know of one world class player who I am convinced takes pictures of cubes he offers as gamesmanship, especially if he is completely confident of the correct action.
