I (reluctantly, and I verbalized that to them with an apology) unfortunately had to rule that it was the offended's choice ... I apologized to the offender over and over b/c I felt so bad about it

A similar situation has come up over and over and over again as long as I've been playing backgammon. If the rule and ruling is good, there's absolutely no need to be apologetic and feeling bad about it. But every time such a situation it has come up, almost everyone (with few exceptions), including whichever TD was involved, seemed to have felt some kind of immense disconnect, either between the "right" ruling and the "legal" ruling, or between what's "allowable" and what's "sportsmanlike."

And since that's so ... come on, people, change the rule already.

Before it happens again. And it will happen again.
