The checker should go on the bar. It's deplorable that an opponent would argue otherwise and benefit. That's shabby. But, by the same token, we all need to make our moves slowly and clearly enough so that these awkward situations don't arise in the first place.

This anecdote is an excellent justification for "Legal Moves". Directors and rules officials should take a screen shot of the position along with your story.
